Basal Score
The basal score is the 1st item number of the set of 8 consecutive items the child can successfully complete PRIOR to the ceiling score. You are assuming that the child would be able to do all previous items. The basal score may or may not be where you actually started the assessment. Don't be confused by the fact that basal score technically means starting point.
To determine the basal score, I find it easier to determine my ceiling score first. I start at the beginning of my "ceiling range" and count backward to find 8 consecutive pluses. Any time I encounter a minus, I begin my count over.
